La canzone è il primo singolo estratto dal quinto album in studio di Miss Germanotta, che arriva a 3 anni di distanza da ARTPOP del 2013.
A dare l’annuncio dell’uscita di Perfect Illusion è stata la stessa Lady Gaga, postando delle immagini su Facebook e Instagram.
Il brano è stato scritto e prodotto da Lady Gaga insieme a Kevin Parker, Mike Tucker e Mark Ronson.
Il nuovo album non ha ancora un titolo definitivo: Lady Gaga ci sta lavorando da un paio d’anni, fatte salve le pause per il tour con Tony Bennet e quelle per le riprese della serie TV American Horror Story, che ha visto Miss Germanotta protagonista indiscussa della quinta stagione e confermata per la sesta stagione, in onda a partire dal 16 settembre.
